After a fun day exploring Gold Hill (where N’s great grandmother was born) and Virginia City we headed out this morning with a first stop at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Very cool stuff, most of which was old Virginia and Truckee stock that Nevada bought back from Paramount when Paramount liquidated their rolling stock in 1971.

Now we’re settled in at Lee Vining, and can see Mono Lake if we open the door to our room. We visited both the official visitor’s center (Mono Lake was the first National Forest Service Scenic area) and the one run by the Mono Lake Committee. Exhausted by this, we found a restaurant with a patio view of Mono Lake and drank a pitcher of Mammoth Brewery Amber Ale. Tomorrow we’ll head out for more exploring.

The Tioga pass to Yosemite is closed until Wednesday, but the road is open up to Tioga Lake so we may check that out this week too.
