Notes about the Carpet Installation

Like more and more of the restoration, order here is important. I’m spending some time trying to figure out what is the proper order for installing the carpet pieces. This is for a Coupe’.

For the interior, this is what I have

  1. Rear Tunnel – 7 (This puts the “front” over the “rear”)
  2. Rear Wall Floor – 15 (This puts the “front” over the “rear”)
  3. Rear Wheelarch LH/RH – 17/16
  4. Center Tunnel, LH/RH – 5/6
  5. Front Tunnel, LH/RH – 3/4
  6. Footbox, LH/RH – 1/2
  7. Under Seat, LH/RH – 10/11 – Lots of molding to be done!
  8. Carpet, Front Side LH/RH- 18/19 – Rolls over edge of fiberboard
  9. Front Floor, LH/RH – 8/9 – Installs with snaps

For the boot, this is what I have

  1. Boot Wheelarch, LH/RH – 23/24
  2. Front Boot Panel – 20
  3. Boot Sidewall, LH/RH – 21/22
  4. Boot Floor, 25

The numbers refer to the Reg: No. in the Lotus Elan Service Parts List Section BE.

I also forgot to specify that this was for a LHD car. The difference is in the Footbox carpets (Item 1/2). The cutout for the peddles is in the RH carpet instead of the LH carpet. I’ll need to carefully cut out the peddle hole in the LH carpet and put it where the RH cutout is. Not pretty but it will work.
