Portsmouth Truths
If you go to Portsmouth (which we recommend), and spend some time there, you will come to the appreciate the following truths:
- Going to sea is a dangerous thing.
- Nothing assuages grief over those lost at sea like a fine stone memorial
- Ice cream goes with salt air like nothing else, except perhaps beer
- The world never saw another man as fine as Admiral Lord Nelson.
There are two distinct parts to the touristy parts of Portsmouth. The first is the martime historical section, full of old sailing ships and Tudor-era forts. Recently they’ve added Gunwharf Quays, which is a cross between the Pearl (hip restaurants with patios) and an outlet mall.
The second part is the old beach resort area of Southsea. It’s now a rundown former pleasure pier that could be the set for a Fellini film.
