London Day 2: World History in One Obelisk + Hampton Court

It’s my birthday! I’m going to Hampton Court, a place I’ve wanted to go since I wrote my first term paper on Elizabeth 1, circa 6th grade. I walked along the Thames to take a tube to the train station for the train to Hampton Court. Along the way, I saw this statue, which had a whole amazing history of world conquest in one statue.

  • Sorry – best picture of the actual obelisk I took.
  • Build by a Pharaoh, stolen by a Caesar.
  • Found by a new ruler, given to an Empire. Note obligatory Nelson reference..
  • Then damaged by German bombing In World War One

The regular train to Hampton Court was offline due to maintenance that hadn’t completed on time. The staff at the train station found me another route, and a train and bus ride later, I was there!
